Abstract
This article reviews the results of a school-based self-management intervention for Chinese obese children at risk for metabolic syndrome. Twenty-eight Chinese obese children (M age = 10 years) and their parents participated in the study. Metabolic syndrome risk factors were measured pre- and post-intervention. The risk factors included Body Mass Index, waist circumstance, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, High-sensitivity C-reactive Protein, fasting plasma glucose, and fasting blood insulin. After 6 months of school-based self-management intervention, all risk factors with the exception of triglycerides and fasting plasma glucose changed significantly in the healthful direction (p < 0.01). This pilot study offers promising implications for school interventions that are delivered by school-based practitioners collaborating with parents, teachers, and children. An individualized program based on a self-care and -management framework may have utility as a relatively cost-effective, school-based intervention to improve children’s health.

Jiying Ling, PhD, MS, RN, is an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University College of Nursing. She obtained a Master’s degree in Biostatistics and a PhD in Nursing from University of Louisville. Her research interests are theory-driven, multi-component physical activity and nutrition interventions that target both parents and children to improve children’s healthy behaviors, cardiovascular health, and cognitive function. She is also interested in the application of advanced statistical methods, such as cost-effectiveness analysis, mixed-effect regression model, structural equation modeling, survival analysis, and meta-analysis, to behavioral research.
Laura M. Anderson, PhD, is an Assistant Professor, Licensed Psychologist, and Director of the PULSE Healthy Weight Research Team at the University at Buffalo (School of Nursing) in the United States. She is a licensed psychologist specializing in pediatric school psychology. Current PULSE clinical trials focus on promoting health through (a) supporting parents in changing home food environments in a feasible manner, and (b) emphasizing mental health and de-emphasizing dieting in family healthy weight promotion. All programs are based in school districts and school-based family resource centers. Dr Anderson teaches courses in statistics, research methodology, and specialized intervention courses for psychiatric nurse practitioners.
Hong Ji, MSN, RN, is an Associate Professor in Nursing at the Affiliated Qianfoshan Hospital of Shandong University in China. From 2012–2013, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Louisville studying nursing research methods. Her current research interest is in promoting successful aging in elderly adults and self-management behaviors in caregivers of clients with dementia. She has published peer-reviewed manuscripts related to Metabolic Syndrome self-management and quality of life in elderly adults and obese children.
